Webflow vs Next.js: when to use what (our honest take)

We build with both. Here's our framework for choosing the right tool for each project.

We get this question constantly: should we build our site in Webflow or Next.js? The honest answer is: it depends. We use both regularly, and each has clear strengths. Here's our decision framework.

When to Choose Webflow

Choose Webflow when: your team needs to make content updates without a developer, your site is primarily marketing-focused (landing pages, blogs, portfolios), you need to launch fast and iterate on design frequently, and your budget is optimized for speed over customization.

Choose Next.js when: you need custom functionality (dashboards, user accounts, complex interactions), performance is critical (e-commerce, high-traffic sites), you're building a product, not just a marketing site, and you need full control over your tech stack and hosting.

The Hybrid Approach

The hybrid approach works too. We've built several projects where the marketing site lives in Webflow (easy for the marketing team to update) while the product/app is built in Next.js. They share the same design system and feel like one cohesive experience.

Cost comparison: a typical Webflow marketing site costs $2,000-5,000 and takes 1-2 weeks. An equivalent Next.js site costs $5,000-15,000 and takes 2-4 weeks. But the Next.js site gives you unlimited flexibility for future features that Webflow simply can't support.

Our Recommendation

Our recommendation: if you're unsure, start with Webflow. You can always migrate to Next.js later when your needs outgrow it. Starting with the simpler tool and upgrading when necessary is almost always more cost-effective than over-engineering from day one.
