The right answer for almost every business is both. The split is more about sequencing and weighting than choosing one over the other.
AEO is the larger surface by volume and the easier place to start. Restructure your top 20 to 50 pages around buyer questions, add the schema, and you will see snippet and AI Overview appearances within 30 to 90 days. The infrastructure is the same as classic SEO so the work fits inside an existing content team.
GEO is the smaller surface today but has more open slots. Most competitors have not started, which means a modest investment can take significant ChatGPT and Perplexity citation share in a category. Entity authority and brand mentions take longer to compound, so starting earlier matters more.
If you have to pick one to invest in this quarter, pick the one that matches where your buyers research. If they default to Google, AEO first. If they default to ChatGPT or Perplexity, GEO first.
