Sneaks
Sneaker shopping that respects the obsession.
Sneaks was an internal concept built around a frustration we heard from sneakerheads: every shopping app treats their hobby like commodity retail. We sketched what it could look like if the app respected the obsession.
The brief
Sneaks is a concept design for a sneaker shopping app where product photography is treated like editorial. Detail shots, multi-angle galleries, sole and stitching close-ups, and a 'step closer' detail flow that lets users zoom into any element of the shoe. We designed the brand and the iOS/Android app across eight weeks.
What we solved
Sneaker buyers are demanding. They want to inspect the heel cup, the lace pattern, the stitching, and the sole tread before buying. Most retail apps treat sneaker photos like generic product shots and lose the buyer at the moment of consideration. Sneaks had to make the product feel inspectable.
How we got there
We designed each product page like a magazine feature: full-bleed hero shot, then a scroll-through of detail moments (sole, stitching, lace pattern, heel) with editorial captions. The 'step closer' interaction lets users tap any element and zoom directly to that detail. The brand uses confident editorial typography and a restrained palette that lets the product photography lead.
What we shipped
The Sneaks concept spans a home feed with curated drops, individual product pages with the editorial detail flow, and a streamlined Stripe checkout. The brand system extends across the app, the marketing site, and email campaigns the team would run post-launch.
What changed for the client
Sneaks was published as an internal concept and was used as a reference design for retail clients. The work informed a paid engagement with a footwear brand that wanted similar editorial treatment for their direct-to-consumer site.
Frequently asked.
Questions that come up most often when companies reach out about projects like this.
It's an AXI internal concept. We use concept work to push our craft in retail and mobile commerce, categories where the product photography deserves more design respect than typical e-commerce gives it.
Yes. We pair custom React Native or Next.js front ends with the right commerce backend for inventory, payments, and fulfillment so we don't have to rebuild commerce primitives.
Treat the product photography like a magazine feature. Lead with a full-bleed hero. Use detail shots to tell a narrative about the product. Surround them with restrained typography and let the photography lead the hierarchy.
