Spendly
A new card for every checkout, every time.
Spendly was an internal concept inspired by friends who'd had their cards leaked one too many times. They needed a wallet that treated every checkout as disposable. We sketched it.
The brief
Spendly is a concept design for a digital wallet with disposable virtual cards for online shopping. Generate a new card for every checkout, set a spend limit, and burn it after use. We designed the brand and the iOS/Android app across ten weeks of internal exploration.
What we solved
Privacy-focused fintech is a niche category that lives or dies on whether the privacy story feels paranoid or empowering. Spendly had to make virtual cards feel like a normal upgrade rather than a tinfoil-hat tool. The brand had to be confident without being smug, and the app had to be fast enough that creating a new card felt no slower than using a saved card.
How we got there
We designed the card-creation flow to be three taps from app open. The home screen surfaces recent cards and one-tap card creation. Spend limits, merchant locks, and auto-expiry are accessible inline rather than buried in advanced settings. The brand uses confident neutral typography paired with a single bold accent, signaling 'utility' rather than 'rebel'.
What we shipped
The Spendly concept lands on three primary surfaces: cards (active virtual cards), create (the quick-create flow), and history (transaction log per card). Stripe sketches handle the actual virtual card issuance and payment processing. The brand system extends across the app, marketing site, and email receipts.
What changed for the client
Spendly was published as an internal portfolio piece and informed a paid client engagement with a privacy-focused fintech. The concept's restrained branding approach became a reference for our subsequent fintech work.

It's an AXI internal concept. We use concept work to explore design problems we find interesting and to attract more client work in adjacent categories. Spendly informed a paid fintech engagement.
Yes. Stripe Issuing is the most common way to ship virtual cards in consumer fintech. We've integrated Stripe products including Issuing, Connect, and Checkout across multiple builds.
We frame privacy as a default expectation, not a paranoid feature. Restrained branding, plain language, and friction-free creation flows make virtual cards feel like a normal upgrade rather than a niche tool.
